Basketball for Brent Grabill is a nearly perfect game that he likes to work at as his hobby to uphold the game's integrity.
Grabill has worked as a high school basketball referee since 1988, officiating varsity games since 1992.
"It's the team aspect, the camaraderie with your teammates, and it's one of the few team sports that an individual person can go and work on almost everything — your shooting, rebounding, dribbling — all by himself, whenever he wants to," he said. "You can make yourself better without having somebody else helping.
"It's one of the best sports ever made, just from that aspect."
Grabill, who farms and works as a rural mail carrier in the Roseland area, played basketball for Roseland High School before graduating in 1982. He continues to play in a men's league at the Hastings Family YMCA and on a team in the Whoopers and Hoopers tournament each March.
