Making the most of middle school

Middle School Wednesday afternoon.

Eighth-grader Anthony Market remembers how confusing the first day of middle school can be.

"It was a little disorienting on my first day," he said. "I went up to the front and it was just a little confusing, because we didn't know where to go."

Market was one of about a dozen Peer Helper volunteers who led fifth-grade students on small group tours Wednesday around Hastings Middle School, showing them the classrooms that will be their surroundings in the fall. Fifth-graders from Hawthorne, Lincoln, Longfellow and Watson toured the building at different times.

Market, whose tour guide partner was eighth-grader Austin Seamann, showed a handful of Longfellow fifth-graders his locker.

"Oh, that's tiny," one fifth-grader said.

"It's actually pretty big," Market responded, pointing out it had plenty of room for his coat, backpack and books.
