LINCOLN — "Crazy."
The term quickly gained popularity among St. Cecilia students and spectators during the Hawkettes' Class C-2 semifinal game Friday afternoon against Pender at the girls state basketball tournament.
"Crazy" was the St. Cecilia fan theme for Friday's matchup. Students clamored classic St. Cecilia chants clad in costumes ranging from banana suits and "Where's Waldo" attire to tutus and pjamas.
"Crazy" was also the term many fans used when prompted about the school's numerous appearances at state tournaments and state championship games this year.
"It's been pretty wild," said Emalee Napier, a senior on the cheerleading team. "These trips are something that gives us unity. Everyone comes together because we're all fighting for the same goal — a state championship."
The St. Cecilia volleyball team secured the state volleyball championship in October. In addition, the Hawkette cheer and dance programs made impressive showings at the Nebraska State Cheer and Dance competition Feb. 20-21. The Hawkette dance team took home runner-up prizes in both the pom and jazz divisions of the dance competitions. Although they didn't place, the cheer team came away proud, as well.
