Man dies during normal grain loading process

EDGAR — The man who died in a grain bin accident near here Tuesday was engaging in a routine activity when he was killed, according to Clay County Sheriff Jeff Franklin.

Alan Watson, 66, of rural Fairfield was inside of a metal grain bin at 1012 N. C St., Tuesday morning that Franklin estimated to be 1 1/2 stories high, 12 feet in diameter and half full of corn. Watson was using an auger to load trucks.

"His wife and one of the truck drivers was outside the bin when something happened and no grain was coming through," Franklin said. "They started looking for him and could not find him. They called for rescue. The truck driver went in and tried to find him. They actually cut the bin apart and started moving the grain away to get to him."
