Eleven railcars were derailed Sunday east of Hastings at a rail yard near U.S. Highway 6 and Maxon Road.
Andy Williams, spokesman for BNSF Railway, said the incident occurred at 2 p.m. when a blizzard was creating near-whiteout conditions. The snowstorm dumped about 5 inches of snow on Hastings.
The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time, Williams said.
At the time of the incident, the 134-car train was moving about 4 mph in a rail yard. It had just been loaded with coal and was heading out onto the mainline track when 11 cars tipped and overturned. The spill left coal all over and blocked the mainline track for several hours.
