Fillmore Central's Rachel Hoarty looks to shoot between
against Wahoo defenders Tschida Johnson (25) and Gabrielle
Shannon in the first round of the Class C-1 state tournament
Thursday in Lincoln.
LINCOLN — Fillmore Central headed to the capital city with confidence that it could earn the school's first-ever win at the state tournament.
The Panther fans and players will have to keep waiting, though, as the team could get nothing going Thursday afternoon at the Pershing Center in a 45-31 loss to sixth-seeded Wahoo in the opening round of the Class C-1 state tournament.
Third-seeded Fillmore Central (24-3) missed its first 14 shots from the field, allowing Wahoo (17-9) to grab a 7-0 lead.
Panther junior Audrey Malone first put her team on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer with 2:42 left in the first quarter. Then she went back down the floor and hit another, getting her team back into the game. Fillmore Central lead 8-7 after the first quarter.
In the second period, however, Wahoo broke a four-minute scoring drought by going on a 11-2 run — fueled by five points from senior Samantha Grandgenett and four points from sophomore Gabrielle Shannon.
Wahoo led 18-14 at half, as Fillmore Central was only 5-of-29 from the field.
