St. Cecilia back in title game

St. Cecilia's Clare Hamburger (3) and Alyssa Schropp react to
their 52-42 win over Hershey in the semifinals of the Class
C-2 state tournament this morning in Lincoln.

LINCOLN — St. Cecilia has yet to lose to a Class C-2 team this season.

Now, the Hawkettes hope that streak continues Saturday.

The second-seeded Hawkettes (22-4) are back in the state title game, getting there with a 52-42 victory over third-seeded Hershey (21-5) in the Class C-2 semifinals this morning at the Pershing Center.

"This is great, that is what we wanted," STC senior Olivia Thomas said. "It was rough and we got through it, and now we're going to the championship."

STC will play the winner of top-seeded Crofton (26-0) at 9 a.m. Saturday at Devaney Sports Center. The title game will be broadcast statewide by Nebraska Educational Television.

Leading 43-34 after three quarters this morning, all St. Cecilia had to do was put the Panthers away in the fourth quarter, but that proved to be easier said than done.

The Hawkettes got off to a sluggish start in the period, allowing Hershey senior Daynlee Miller to steal the ball away four times in the opening minute. That resulted in a 5-0 run for Hershey that cut the STC lead to just 43-39.
