In the first half of Monday night’s Class C-2, District 4 championship game, long possessions and solid defense led to a haltime score of 8-6, in favor of Doniphan-Trumbull.
But the second half gave the large crowd at Hastings High gymnasium quite the show.
Sutton knocked off C-2 No. 5 Doniphan-Trumbull 43-49 in double overtime to win the district championship and clinch a spot in the state tournament in Lincoln.
“We knew it was going to be a battle. We were hoping that defensively we could stay in the ball game,” said Sutton coach Jon Ladehoff, whose team has won 15 of its last 19 games. “(Doniphan-Trumbull has) a lot of weapons and are a solid team. When it stayed low scoring early, our kids started gaining confidence.”
