MANHATTAN, Kan. — Smith Center hoisted a new trophy Saturday.
The Lady Red girls basketball team made school history, winning its first title in that sport with a 63-55 win over No. 1-seeded Jefferson County North in the Kansas Class 2A championship at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.
Second-seeded Smith Center (24-2) and the Chargers (23-3) played a game that featured seven ties, nine lead changes and wouldn't be decided until the closing stretch of the fourth quarter.
"We finally crossed that hurdle in basketball — girls or boys," said Smith Center head coach Nick Linn in an interview with the Hays Daily News. "We finally crossed that hurdle. Hopefully, it won't take 20-some years until it happens again."
Leading just 41-40 early in to the last period, the Lady Red needed to do something to create some seperation on the scoreboard. They were able to do just that from the charity stripe.
