LINCOLN — In Saturday’s Class C-2 third-place game, Doniphan-Trumbull dominated Freeman in nearly every aspect.
Following a heartbreaking overtime loss to the eventual champions Archbishop Bergan, the Cardinals quickly set the tone Saturday. An overwhelming inside presence and unselfish passing led to a 59-44 D-T victory at Lincoln East High School.
“We knew we had an advantage inside. Our kids, I’m so proud of them for the way they responded to the loss yesterday,” said Doniphan-Trumbull head coach Steve Hartman. “I was surprised they came out with the energy they did. I think that was a factor in the game.”
It was obvious early on that the Cardinals had the advantage on the inside. In the first half, Doniphan-Trumbull out-rebounded Freeman 20-4 — many of which were offensive rebounds leading to easy putbacks.
“We started this year saying we wanted to be a great rebounding team. We wanted to get the offensive boards, and we got them in the first half,” Hartman said. “We knew we’d be a good defensive rebounding team with our size and our quickness, but I think our kids committed to getting the offensive glass. It paid off in the end today.”
