HEBRON — As Makayla Johnson and Dylan Fischer fished dill pickles one after another with tongs out of a big jar, they were doing their part to ensure Thayer Central elementary students are as healthy as possible.
The two Thayer Central Community Schools sixth-graders are part of the nine-member business team that stocks the Snack Shack. On Friday afternoons, elementary students visit the Snack Shack, just outside of the intermediate building's library, one class at a time.
There they purchase everything from Gatorade to granola bars. But the most popular items are pickles, 50 cents apiece.
"They don't really seem like a healthy food, but they kind of are," sixth-grader Maggie Harris said. "They're not that bad for you."
