Former NU football players take court for fallen teammate

Former University of Nebraska football player Kyle
Ringenberg goes for a layup against Hastings College's Alex
Thayer during "Jump Shots for John" Friday at Lynn Farrell
Arena. The Husker team won the game.

Mismatched red shirts and the youth of their opponents didn't stop a group of former Nebraska football athletes from taking the basketball court to help one of their own.

Ten athletes took to the court Friday at the Lynn Farrell Arena for "Jump Shots for John." The benefit basketball game against the Hastings College men's basketball team was organized to raise money for the family of John Clarke, a former offensive tackle for the 1990-1991 Huskers football team.

Clarke, 43, died in February after collapsing at a Lincoln gym from a combination of high blood pressure and a heart arrhythmia. Clarke was the head of the Lincoln Police Department's K9 unit and a SWAT team member.

Shane Swanson, a former Husker wingback in the 1980s, thought it was important to help a fallen Cornhusker.

"With John being one of the members of the Husker nation, I'm glad to be out here to help," he said.
