A college final with public appeal

Within minutes, a cornfield and urban skyline began to take shape behind the Blue Moon Coffee Co.

Hastings College students in HC assistant professor of art Steve Snell’s advanced painting class began painting a pair of murals Tuesday afternoon on the backside of the coffee shop at 635 W. Second St. The murals, which Snell expects to be completed in about a week, are in lieu of a final test.

Sophomore Katherine Arias came up with the two designs — a sun-soaked cornfield in one and a handful of tall, illuminated buildings in the other.

“We wanted it to be more about Hastings and a form of art for the city,” she said. “So I wanted to show the city life and the really popular farm life here.”
