Every Wednesday during the school year, Hastings Public Schools students are let out of school an hour early for what staff members call PLC time.
That time without students has been well spent as Alcott Elementary was awarded the title Monday of National Model of a PLC at Work by a national organization.
But what exactly is a PLC or professional learning community?
Chad Dumas, the district’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, said the concept of PLCs is to close the knowing/doing gap.
“We know what we need to do with kids in terms of what they need to know and do, but are we doing it?” he said. “We go to a training or a workshop but putting it to use in the classroom is a whole different thing.”
