Hastings family rides out tornado at Beaver Crossing

It was a storm scenario all-too-familiar to Hastings resident Todd Cerny.

Cerny was visiting in-laws George and Jan Hoffmeister at Beaver Crossing Sunday for what was supposed to be a Mother’s Day celebration. But instead of gathering around a table with his wife, Julie, and five children, Caden, 10, Emi, 8, Ani, 6, Gigi, 4, and Bri, 22 months, the family ended up hunkering down inside a cramped cellar for about 15 minutes as an unconfirmed tornado raged through the tiny Seward County village of roughly 400 people.

“It was pretty intense,” Cerny said. “We didn’t think it was that bad. We’re very fortunate nobody got hurt.”
