City 'going all out' for new veterans home

The Hastings City Council is eager to support and polish a bid that could bring the Central Nebraska Veterans Home to Hastings in 2015.

The current 126-year-old facility is in Grand Island. The state will be accepting bids from several Nebraska communities interested in housing a new building, which would bring close to 400 jobs and thousands of dollars in revenue to the awarded city.

Council members unanimously approved a resolution proposed by Mayor Vern Powers to support the bid at the council's regular meeting Monday.

"We're going all out to get this bid," Powers said. "Hastings has so much to offer to a facility like this. We would be able to create a pastoral setting so the residents of the facility feel like they're living somewhere special."
