HPS names new board member

A Hastings High alumni has been named the newest member of the Hastings Board of Education.

At Thursday’s board work session, Corey Stutte was sworn in to fill the seat vacated by Matt Pershing.

Stutte, 32, is a 2000 graduate of Hastings High.

He left Hastings after graduation and earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communications from the University of Central Florida. He also has a master’s degree in international relations with a concentration in national security affairs from Troy University in Alabama and a doctorate in public affairs from University of Central Florida.

Stutte served three and a half years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, earning the rank of lieutenant.

Stutte and his wife, Laura, moved back to Nebraska in March 2012 and to Hastings about a year ago where Corey owns and operates Strategic Pioneer, a domestic and international market information company.

Pershing, an orthodontist with Pershing Orthodontics, resigned effective April 1 after moving out of the district.

He was appointed to the board in October 2007 when board member Nick Valle left his seat, also after moving out of the district.

Since he was appointed to the position Pershing was elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. Pershing was among the top vote-getters in both elections.

Stutte will fulfill Pershing’s term, which will expire at the end of 2016.
