Generations of HC graduates celebrate

Eldon Grothen of rural Hastings received his 50-year
certificate during Hastings College's commencement
ceremony Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena. His
granddaughter Cassie McLeod received her undergraduate
degree during the ceremony.

Cassie McLeod and Eldon Grothen embraced after each walked across the stage Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena during the Hastings College commencement ceremony.

McLeod, a 22-year-old Hastings native and Adams Central alum, graduated with a degree in professional accounting 50 years after Grothen, her maternal grandfather, received his bachelor's degree from the college in business administration.

Grothen, now 71, was one of a couple dozen members of the class of 1963 to receive a 50-year certificate at the 2013 commencement.

"I think it's something really neat and exciting," McLeod said. "It shows that even though Hastings College is a small community there are families that continue to go to the school."
Grothen was notified about the celebration of his graduating class's golden anniversary about six months ago.
