Public defender dies

Adams County Public Defender Art Toogood died Friday at the Nebraska Heart Institute & Heart Hospital in Lincoln.

Toogood was admitted to the hospital after a heart attack on Sunday, which caused a mistrial in the jury trial on which he was working.

Deputy Public Defenders Bob Wolf and Sam Zeleski confirmed the news Friday afternoon. The two attorneys have been taking over Toogood's case load since Monday while dealing with their feelings about their boss.

A private graveside service for the family will be held Tuesday followed by a public Celebration of Life Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at the 281 Cafe (formerly the Garden Cafe).
