Service honors sacrifice of veterans, families

Beginning his address in a self-depreciating manner, the Rev. Joel Remmers said that any veterans or family members of veterans present may have more qualified speakers than himself.

Remmers, pastor at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was the featured speaker during Monday's Memorial Day program at Parkview Cemetery. Although he is not a veteran himself. Remmers, who grew up in Rantoul, Ill, home to Chanute Air Force Base, spoke from the perspective of someone who regularly witnessed sacrifice.

"Today, I don't just want to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country because I grew up with their families," he said.

About 100 of the more than 340 students in Remmer's high school class had a parent serving in the military.
