A national shortage on the delivery of coal has created low coal reserve levels at Hastings Utilities power generation plant east of the city.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad has been experiencing delivery shortages across the nation over the winter, come of which has been caused by the railroad hauling more oil out of North Dakota combined with a hard winter that frequently interrupted rail transport.
HU’s Board of Public Works met in executive session over the matter during Thursday’s meeting.
“Burlington Northern has been behind in their deliveries from last fall on through the winter,” Marv Schultes, HU manager, said after the meeting. “They are having a hard time meeting their commitments of coal delivery. We were down to 25 percent of our desired coal inventory for a while. Now, we are at about 50 percent.
