YORK — Hastings High junior goalkeeper Bailey Petzoldt saw what was a boring game for her turn into a serious situation at the Class B, District 5 championship against Beatrice in York.
In 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time, the top-seeded Tigers had 30 shots on goal. The No. 3-seeded Lady Orange had just one.
Still, after a scoreless tie, the game had to be settled in a shootout, where Petzoldt shined.
She had three saves to help HHS win the shootout 2-1 and earn its seventh consecutive district championship with a 1-0 win Thursday at the Cornerstone Sports Complex.
"It was kind of my redemption from state (last season) when we went into a shootout and I lost it," said Petzoldt, referring to a 1-0 loss to Gretna in the state semifinals. "Coach told me that this was my time to shine. I processed that through my head and I picked it up."
With the win, the Tigers (13-3) advance to the Class B state tournament, which starts May 10 at Creighton's Morrison Stadium in Omaha. The Tigers will be the No. 5 seed and play at 3 p.m.
