Late in the first half of the Class B, District 7 championship match against York, the Hastings High girls soccer team found itself in prime position with a free kick directly behind the goalie box. But Kaitlyn Pawlowski’s winding shot caromed away off the goal post.
Only a few seconds later, the Tigers did find the back of the net when Alex Schmidt hit a through ball to a wide open Marika VanBrocklin, who put the ball past the Dukes’ keeper for a 1-0 lead on Thursday at Hastings College’s Lloyd Wilson Field. It was all HHS would need.
VanBrocklin assisted a Pawlowski goal in the second half as No. 1-seeded HHS (10-6) captured the district crown for the eighth-straight year with a 2-0 win over No. 2-seeded York (9-5).
“This was something we started seven years ago, we’ve always won districts. It’s become a tradition for us,” said HHS head coach Chris Pedroza. “This was a great way to end the season for us. The girls put together a complete performance today — a complete game.”
