FAIRFIELD — The Sandy Creek boys track and field team picked the right time to put together its best meet of the season.
After winning just one invitational all season, the Cougars captured the Class C, District 9 title with 118 points Thursday.
Doniphan-Trumbull was second with 103 points, followed by St. Cecilia (97), Sutton (87) and Blue Hill (55).
It took a team effort to propel Sandy Creek to the title, as no Cougar won more than one individual event. Sophomore Brendan Lipovsky won the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 7 1/2 inches; junior Matt Beck finished first in the 400-meter dash in 51.7 seconds; and Kaleb Shafer won the 1,600 in 4:57.3. The Cougars' 1,600 relay team of Beck, Trevor Gordanier, Austin Nacke and Scott Hild also won (3:32.2).
