Tigers fall short against Gretna

Hastings High's Michael Sadd walks off the field following the
Tigers' loss to Gretna in the first round of the Class B state
tournament Thursday in Omaha.

OMAHA — The Hastings High boys soccer team's chances for an upset were falling as steadily as the rain at Creighton's Morrison Stadium on Thursday.

The No. 7-seeded Tigers scored first in their opening-round match at the Class B state tournament, but second-seeded Gretna scored the next two goals to capture a 2-1 win.

For the third consecutive season, after reaching the title game in 2010, the Tigers (9-8) ended their season with a loss in the first round of state.

"I think we put (Gretna) on their heels at times in the second half. I thought we played great," HHS head coach Mike Nanfito said. "I felt that overall, we were just unfortunate to not find the net."
