KEARNEY — At last year’s Tri-City invite, the St. Cecilia boys golf team had one mission: dethrone three-time invite champion Kearney Catholic. This year, the Bluehawks had repeat on their minds.
St. Cecilia edged out Grand Island Central Catholic by two strokes to win its second consecutive Tri-City invite. STC finished with a team score of 346 on a windy day at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.
Hastings High placed third with a 357, while Adams Central shot a 366, which was good enough for fourth.
The Bluehawks’ head coach Randy Ahrens said it speaks highly about his team that it was able to come away with the victory even when conditions were not favorable.
“It’s very important that you’re able to compete, even when things aren’t going as well as you’d hoped,” Ahrens said. “If you looked at the scores, and you see an 86 places in the top five, that just shows you how tough the conditions were that the kids had to play in today. Our kids mentioned in particular how tough the greens were — the speed of the greens and the conditions of the greens. We lost a lot of strokes on the greens because of that.”
