Tigers put together season's best round, qualify for state

GRAND ISLAND — No one was going to stop the top team in the state, Creighton Prep, from capturing the Class A, District 1 crown. All five golfers from the defending state champions shot in the 70s and took home five individual medals at the district meet Tuesday at Riverside Golf Club.

The Hastings High boys golf team knew that if it were to qualify for state, it would be a battle for second or third.

The Tigers — who were the fourth best team at Tuesday's meet, according to the new NSAA seedings — knew that only their best effort could help them qualify for the state meet as a team.

HHS did just that, placing third with a team score of 318 — its lowest of the season. The Tigers finished one stroke behind second-place Fremont. Prep had a dominating championship score of 295, as the top three teams qualified for the Class A meet May 21-22 at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln.

"We had confidence in ourselves that we could come in and be competitive," HHS head coach Bryan Vetter said of his team's chances before the meet. "We knew that Creighton Prep, Fremont and Lincoln Southeast had outstanding teams. And of course, with Grand Island being on their home course, we knew they'd be competitive."
