In any sport, experience can help an athlete overcome mistakes or even know what is going on in the opponent's mind.
With that in mind, the Adams Central girls tennis team may face an uphill battle going into the Class B state tournament Thursday and Friday at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Lincoln.
The Patriots have just two players returning to the state tournament — the fewest among the three city schools. St. Cecilia has three returning state competitors, while Hastings High has five.
AC head coach Rod Hartman said one of the first things a new player must remember about the state tournament is the change in format. No longer does a match only go to eight games like the regular season, but it is best of three sets. Hartman said, as an athlete, it's important to remember that a bad start can be overcome in three sets, and, on the other hand, a strong start to a match must not be taken lightly.
