OMAHA — The Hastings High girls soccer team notched the program’s signature victory with an upset Thursday of Class B powerhouse Omaha Skutt Catholic.
The Tigers (12-6) stunned Skutt (13-4) 2-1 in a shootout at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium.
The Class B No. 9-ranked Tigers, who picked up just their second win ever at the state tournament, outscored the No. 2 SkyHawks 4-2 in the shootout to send home a team that was vying for a seventh-straight trip to the state championship game.
“This was definitely an upset. We were the underdog,” said Hastings High head coach Chris Pedroza. “We had tremendous respect for Skutt. I mean, how many championships have they won? We came up here and we believed in ourselves. We knew that if we played as a team we’d get the results that we would want.”
With the victory, Hastings moves on to the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 3 Gretna (12-5).
