GRAND ISLAND — Thayer Central's Jay Cottam shot an even par 72 to win Monday's Class D, District 2 golf meet at Indianhead Country Club.
He went 2-over on the front nine and then finished one stroke under par on the back to win the title by 11 strokes. But Cottam said he felt like he left a couple of putts out on the course.
"I thought I could save a few shots," he said. "I ended up with a 72 and I'm happy with that, but I could've saved a couple. I had three 3-putts on the front nine and that kind of hurt the score."
His performance propelled the defending state champions to a team title with a score of 339. Thomas Feulner shot an 86, good enough for fourth individually, while Ben Baden shot a 90 for ninth. Caleb Krupicka (91) and Jacob Kniep (95) also competed for the Titans, who will compete as a team in next Wednesday's Class D state golf meet at the Kearney Country Club.
"We've been playing pretty good lately. Our No. 4 golfer, Tom (Feulner), he's stepped up his game a lot," Cottam said. "He's been huge for us, actually. From last year, he's dropped off 20 shots from his average score. He's got to be happy about that, and I'm happy for him that he's playing so good when we need him to play the best."
Sutton qualified for state with a runner-up score of 367.
