HHS seniors capture pair of medals

Saturday in Omaha.

OMAHA — For two Hastings High track and field athletes, Saturday presented them with one last opportunity to add to their career medal count in state track.

And the two seniors did just that.

Hastings High senior Tyler Ripperger started the second day of the state meet at Omaha Burke by placing fourth in the Class A 800-meter run in a time of 1 minute, 54.33 seconds to end his career as a four-time state medalist in the event.

Later in the day, fellow senior Eric Gawrych followed up last year's runner-up finish in the discus with a third-place showing — recording a mark of 163 feet, 11 inches.

"I wish I could have made my last throw of my high school career a little better, but I still got 163. It felt pretty good," Gawrych said. "I was expecting a little better, but with the wind going the wrong way that I wanted it, it didn't turn out that way. But it was a good day."
