KEARNEY — Thayer Central positioned itself for a possible state championship after owning the team lead on day one of the Class D state golf meet at Meadowlark Hills.
The Titans shot a 347 Tuesday — 20 strokes better than second-place Bancroft-Rosalie and 29 strokes better than third-place Medicine Valley. Deshler sits in 10th place with team total of 410 at the 15-team, two-round tournament.
Jay Cottam led Thayer Central with an 8-over 79, putting him in a tie for second place after Tuesday's first round. Cottom shot a 41 on the front nine before coming back with a 38. He had 11 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey.

LINCOLN — Hastings High senior Craig Marble fired a 75 Tuesday to put him in a tie for 14th place after the first round of the Class A boys golf state meet at Pioneers Golf Course.
Marble's 4-over-par round led the Tigers on Tuesday, as Hastings High shot a 314 — it's best 18-hole score of the season — for eighth place at the 12-team, two-round tournament. Fellow seniors Josh Hinrichs and Sam Johnson each shot a 79, while junior Taylor Hawes wasn't far behind with an 81. Junior Jacob Parker rounded out the HHS field with a 90.
Creighton Prep had all five of its golfers shoot a 74 or better Tuesday to take the lead with a 283. Lincoln Pius X shot a 289 for second. But just 12 strokes separate the next six teams, as Lincoln Southwest shot a 302 Thursday for third.
GRAND ISLAND — Adams Central sophomore Ashton Graham shot an 83 Tuesday to put him in a tie for 22nd place after the first round of the Class B boys golf state meet at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course.
Graham enters today's second round just two strokes behind three golfers tied for 15th place, the cutoff for a medal.
Graham, the lone competitor from Tribland in Class B, opened with a 43 on the front nine before shooting a 40 on the back nine.
LINCOLN — After the first day of the Class C state golf meet at Highlands Golf Course, the top seven teams — including St. Cecilia — were separated by just 11 strokes.
The Bluehawks shot a 339 Tuesday for a tie for fifth place with Elgin Public/Pope John and Valentine. Gibbon is in first with a 328.
Sutton, the defending state champion, sits in 13th place after a 370 Tuesday.
Leading the way for STC was Thomas Skoch, who fired a 9-over 81 for a tie for 18th place. Alex Sheehy shot an 82 for a tie for 20th. Lance Schmidt (86) and Josh Murman (90) rounded out St. Cecilia's scoring. Jared Jackson (97) also played for St. Cecilia.
