HHS throwers carry strong tradition to state

At last weeks Class A, District 4 track and field meet, three of Hastings High’s four district champions came out of the throws events.

Dylan Rutt and Libby Knapple swept the discus titles while Travis Hartwig won the shot put. Olivia Nicolarsen also finished fourth in the discus to qualify for the Class A state meet beginning on Friday at Omaha Burke.

Those four Tigers are continuing Hastings High’s strong tradition of success in the throwing events at state. Since 1998, the boys and girls have combined for 19 medals in the throws alone, including three gold medalists.

“Our (boys) throwers have done well the past few years. I think we really got it started back in the early 2000s with guys like (Dustin) Stuehrenberg and (Jesse) Rigler,” said HHS boys coach Dave Johnson.
