Titans aim for back-to-back titles

Winning a state championship is difficult. But on Friday, the Thayer Central track and field team will attempt to become just the fourth team in the last 25 years to win consecutive state titles in Class C.

The Titans have their work cut out for them, and head coach Bryan Solomon knows his team won’t be flying under the radar.

“It’s one of those things where once you win it, I think everyone tries to put a target on the team’s back. They want to knock off the ones that did it last year,” he said. “Like we always say, those teams you’re competing against, you just try and find those uniforms and get between them. I think that’s what teams are trying to do to us, too.”

One of the big reasons Thayer Central was able to capture the team championship was Simon Wiedel. As a freshman, Wiedel earned four medals, including gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dash.

This season, Wiedel again qualifier for the same four events — the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump.
