JIH cruises to pair of wins

Zach Merrill just threw strikes, while Ben Clausen got a little luck. Both Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes pitchers were stellar Tuesday night at Duncan Field.

Merrill, the game one starter for the Hastings juniors legion team against the Columbus First National Bank Blues, threw 83 pitches with 59 going for strikes. At one point, he struck out nine of 12 Columbus batters in JIH's 16-1 win in the opener.

Then Clausen, the second starter, pitched five innings and gave up just two hits and no runs to help JIH earn the doubleheader sweep with an 8-2 win.

"Ben Clausen came out after a rocky first start to the year and did great for us. Zach's been our guy and is going to be our guy all year," said head coach Russ Kindig, whose squad improved to 7-1 and upped it's winning streak to five games. "He came out again and threw a bunch of strikes for us, which is what he always does."
