LINCOLN — Last season, the St. Cecilia boys golf team finished second in the state tournament, one stroke behind state champion Gibbon. The Bluehawks had to battle their way to the runner-up finish after ending the first day tied for fourth.
This year, St. Cecilia post the score to beat, leading the competition with a 314 after Wednesday’s first round at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln.
The Bluehawks finished the first day of the Class C state tournament five strokes in front of second-place David City. Minden (348) and Fillmore Central (351) went into day two in 12th and 13th place, respectively.
Lance Schmidt led STC by shooting a 76, which placed him in 12th at the end of the first round. Schmidt finished with two birdies on the back nine en route to a 37, which was two over par.
