KEARNEY — After the first round of competition at the Class D boys golf state tournament, Thayer Central is in a familiar position.

Last season, the Titans led after the first day and went on to win the state championship. On Wednesday, Thayer Central took the first step toward back-to-back titles, finishing the first day with the top team score. The Titans shot a 332 to take a two-stroke lead over Bancroft-Rosalie going into today’s final round at Kearney Country Club in Kearney.

After finishing second individually in last year’s state meet, Thayer Central’s Jay Cottam led all individuals after Wednesday’s competition. Cottam shot a 71 for an even par.

The Thayer Central junior tallied three birdies on the front nine while adding an eagle on the par 5, 14th hole.
