A quarterback is required to be a cerebral athlete. He has to know what the assignments are for his linemen, receivers and backs on every call.
On top of that, he has to be able to read the defense. What coverage are they in? Where is the blitz going to be? Does an audible need to be called?
Tyler Ripperger knows what that's all about, being a two-year starter at the position under his dad, Rick, at Hastings High School.
Up until recently, Ripperger didn't know he'd be playing in Saturday's 55th annual Shrine Bowl game set for 2 p.m. at the University of Nebraska at Kearney's Foster Field.
