HEBRON — It’s been a long time since the town of Hebron had a girls basketball team make the state tournament. So long, in fact, that the school was Hebron High and not Thayer Central.
Hebron last advanced to the state tournament in 1988. The school was runner-up in 1981 and 1987.
As a consolidated school, Thayer Central has not been to the state tournament. The Titans have had some serious struggles on the basketball court, even going winless during the 2014-15, and 2015-16 campaigns.
After a 13-9 finish last season, Andy Long decided to hand off the reins, which landed in the hands of first-year coach Erin Saathoff.
The Titans have experience, especially from a volleyball standpoint as that program has been to Lincoln and numerous district finals. Whether that can transfer to the basketball court remains to be seen.
The Titans play in a tough conference in the Southern Nebraska Conference. The SNC features powerhouses Superior, Fillmore Central, Milford, and Centennial along with other tough competition.
Sydny Havel highlights returners for the Titans, who bring back a total of four starters from a year ago.
Havel averaged 11 points last winter. She’s joined by Bailey Kiburz, Stephanie Meyer, and Chloe Souerdyke as returning starters. Cassie Hergott, a sophomore, is also expected to receive playing time.
