A benefit to raise awareness of recovery options and help the family of a young man slain last month will be Saturday at Libs Park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Jose “Joey” Hansen died of a gunshot wound Sept. 11 in the 700 block of West G Street. His mother, Wendy Hansen of Hastings, believes his death may have been related to his drug addiction.
Saturday’s benefit will feature a recovery theme, including testimonials from people recovering from addiction, including a couple people who hung out in Joey’s circle of friends.
Lisa Bell, a friend of Wendy’s, helped organize the benefit. She said they hope to make people who are in addiction aware of options that are available.
“Our goal is to bring awareness to the community about recovery and the seriousness of the drug addictions we have here in Hastings,” she said. “We’re getting together and making something good out of something tragic.”
Activities will include face painting, kids’ games and yard games. Music for a portion of the event will be provided by musicians from First Baptist Church.
The event will open and close with prayer. To remember Joey, there will be a balloon release and candle lighting. Bracelets with the slogan Justice for Joey will be on sale, too.
There will be a barbecue from noon to 2 p.m., as well as leftovers at 5 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish to share for the meals.
There will be a bake sale, freewill donations and silent auction items from a variety of local businesses to help Wendy with expenses due to Joey’s death.
“We’ve got some really amazing things,” Bell said. “A lot of places in this town have been supportive and I’m really grateful for that.”
