Shelves have been picked bare and even the furnishings themselves are being sold off during the final hours of Herberger’s time in Hastings.
The store is scheduled to close its doors for the final time on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Karen Struss of Prosser and her husband came to pick up several shelving units to go in her son’s shop. They also bought a couple tables.
Although able to purchase furnishings, Karen said, she and her friends wish that the store didn’t have to close.
“It’s very sad,” she said. “I bought a lot of stuff here. I’m really sad to see it go. The staff here has always been wonderful.”
She said she prefers to buy clothes at a retail outlet, such as Herberger’s, and isn’t a fan of online shopping.
Inside, the once jam-packed store has been whittled down as dwindling clothes racks offered the remains of the store’s wares. Following weeks of discounted prices, much of the merchandise has been sold. Several customers searched the few remaining shelves for items being sold at deep discounts.
Mike and Yvonne Hoops of Byron bought a rack that Yvonne plans to use for storage in her garden area.
“I just think it’s sad,” she said. “Now I’ll have to go to Lincoln or Grand Island to go shopping. It’s always nice to come here if I needed something quick.”
