Kool-Aid Days is bringing back Luke Mills, a country-rock artist from Holdrege, for the second year in a row during the Kool-Aid Koncert Aug. 10 at Brickyard Park.
“We were really shocked because normally, I know they don’t do the same thing two years in a row and they asked us if we wanted to come back. We were really honored,” Mills said.
Mills hopes this year will be bigger and better than 2018, which he said already had a large crowd with good reception.
“This year we’re bringing a little bit more oomph to the production,” he said. “Better production lights, better sound.”
Mills has been writing and playing music since 1999. He describes his music as pop/rock/country, with a growing emphasis on the rock portion.
Mills said the audience can expect some country song covers, rock song covers and a few of their original songs like “Heartbeat.” The concert is family-friendly.
“I don’t want to say we are specifically country band because we’re not. We’re just a really good band that plays really good music,” Mills said. “Anyone from 2 years old to probably 200 years is going to enjoy it.”
Luke Mills recently has been touring and playing with other artists like Jordan Davis, Ashley McBryde and Phil Vassar. The band also has played with Lee Brice and Chris Janson, despite being an independent label. Mills said while they enjoy being independent, they are looking for the next step in getting signed to a music label.
“We’ve gotten to play alongside some of the bigger acts in country and rock ‘n’ roll music without being on a label. If it happens, I definitely won’t say no,” Mills said.
Mills is joined by Jeff Erpelding of Kearney on pedal steel, Joe Matticks of Hastings on lead guitar and Sam Schrader of Boone, Iowa, on drums.
Mills said he is excited to play at the Kool-Aid Days Koncert and has loved Kool-Aid from a young age. His favorite flavor is grape.
“Ever since I was 5, I loved Kool-Aid,” he said.
The Brickyard park gates open at 6 p.m. for the Koncert Kool-Aid. The pre-show starts at 7 p.m. and Luke Mills goes onstage at 8 p.m. Fireworks follow the performance.
Admission is free for anyone with a 2019 Kool-Aid Days mug or T-shirt. Otherwise, a small admission will be charged and comes with a coupon for a mug.
