Hastings police are investigating a shooting death that occurred Thursday under the watch of two outside law enforcement agencies at 12th Street near Adams Central Avenue.
Hastings Police Department Capt. Mike Doremus said officers from the Lincoln Police Department and the Nebraska State Patrol were in the 5000 block of West 12th Street to serve a search warrant.
The state patrol was working with Lincoln police to serve the warrant as part of a case being investigated by the Lincoln Police Department, according to a news release from the state patrol.
About noon, law enforcement knocked on the door and announced their presence but there was no answer.
Movement was observed inside the home during that time.
After waiting to allow time for the occupant to answer the door, officers breached the front door of the residence.
Inside, officers found the sole occupant deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.
No law enforcement personnel discharged a weapon during the event.
The identity of the deceased and the reason for the warrant haven’t been released.
Doremus said the incident is being treated as an in-custody death because it occurred when Lincoln officers and state troopers were on scene. The state patrol requested the Adams County Attorney’s Office and Hastings Police Department investigate the case.
State law requires an independent investigation when a death occurs in law enforcement custody. State law also requires a grand jury hearing in such cases. The Adams County Attorney’s Office then will present the evidence collected to a grand jury at a later date.
