City Council tables parade policy

The Hastings City Council voted 5-1 Monday to postpone a decision on a new parade policy.

The policy proposed by staff based on a meeting held in April would set two specific routes for parades in the city with specified staging areas. The policy would also prohibit candy from being thrown from vehicles.

Lee Hogan with the Adams County Fairground board express concerns with the proposed staging areas. He was also concerned with the possibility that the the FairFest parade may no longer be able to cross Burlington Avenue. In past years, kids games were held in the Russ's Market parking lot after the parade.

Based on the concerns expressed during Monday's meeting, councilman Chuck Niemeyer made a motion to postpone a decision until after the May 17 council work session to allow for further discussion and for staff to consider Hogan's concerns.

Councilman Everett Goebel, who had asked to speak on the issue after the motion to postpone was made, was the only one to vote against postponing the vote.

The City Council will again address the issue at the May 17 work session.
