Peter Kortum of Grand Island has been selected to serve as Hastings’ next chief of police.
At a special session of the Hastings City Council this morning, Mayor Vern Powers announced his decision to appoint Kortum for the position. The council approved the mayor’s selection with a vote of 8-0.
Kortum, 60, started his law enforcement career with the Grand Island Police Department in 1974. He became a sergeant in 1987. In 1998, he was promoted to captain and put in charge of the administration division. In 2003, he moved to the uniformed patrol captain. Five years later, he rotated back to the administrative division.
Kortum will officially take over duties as chief on Dec. 3 with a starting salary of $85,190.56.
Kortum said he is excited about the opportunity to serve as police chief for Hastings.
“This is a way for me to personally continue to grow and professionally continue to grow,” he said.
