Justine Steiner, a junior at Hastings High, shows off a photo
album and traditional clothing from her time spent in India.
For six weeks this summer, Hastings High junior Justine Steiner lived in a foreign country, learned a foreign language and felt like a superstar.
“Whenever people would see a white person or an American, instantly they would ask to get taken pictures with or, ‘Hi, hi, hi,’ ‘Miss, miss, miss.’ I felt like a celebrity,” Steiner said.
Steiner spent six weeks living with her host family in Mumbai, India, as part of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth program.
She filled out the initial application for the program about a year ago at the encouragement of her German teacher, Patrick Vogel, whose son Erich has gone on several study abroad trips and currently is spending a year in China.
