Center celebrates veterans

Joe Ballweg listens as Gale Bullard (left) talks about his time
as a medic Friday at the Golden Friendship Center during an
Adams County Senior Services Veterans recognition lunch.

After feeling forgotten for about 60 years, Gene Cookus of Hastings said being remembered can be emotional at times.

Cookus served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1951, including one year in Korea.

He and 23 other veterans were recognized at a ceremony Friday afternoon at the Golden Friendship Center.

"I appreciate it," he said.

Each veteran was presented a certificate and thanked for his service. Each shared the branch of service for which he served. Some shared anecdotes from their time in the military.
