Honored to serve

U.S. Marine Corps veteran Bernard York is pictured with a
frame he made with artillery shells while serving at the Naval
Ammunition Depot during World War II.

GLENVIL — It has been more than 70 years since Bernard York enlisted in the U.S. Marines at age 21. Yet many memories of that service come to him as though it were only yesterday.

"I went to boot camp at Paris Island. It's in South Carolina," he said. "And then after that they shipped me to Quantico, Va. That's the big Marine base on the East Coast."

York served from early 1942 until he was discharged in May 1946, spending about 1 1/2 years of that time at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings.
