Giving thanks for our veterans

Sgt. Maj. Richard Burch of the Army National Guard speaks
to Wallace Elementary students as part of a Veterans Day
program Monday afternoon.

Chances are only one of the roughly 100 children will join the military, but Sgt. Major Richard Burch wanted them to recognize those who have served and hoped to inspire them to be good citizens.

Burch spoke to students Monday during a Veterans Day school assembly at Wallace Elementary School.

Because less than 1 percent of Americans serve in the military, he said it's important to recognize the soldiers who fought to keep America free.

"Today, throughout the country, people recognize the men and women who have served our country," Burch said. "Their devotion and sacrifices have become the bedrock for the security and freedom of the United States."
