Then & Now: Dandy's Drive-Inn/Runza East

Then: On May 23, 1964, Dandy's Drive-Inn made its debut into what was already a bustling collection of drive-ins in Hastings.

Cars queued in the 41-stall parking lot and families queued in the narrow lobby to collect free, chilled cups of Pepsi, lemonade and root beer — giveaways that were part of the restaurant's grand opening lure.

Topping the menu at the drive-in were the restaurant's notorious 15-cent hamburgers, 25-cent "Fishwich" sandwiches, and the whopping 44-cent "Big Dandy" burger, along with fresh-from-the-frier "French fried potatoes."
